The mean age of onset of problem gambling in our patients is aged 21 and 51% of our patients experienced a big win early in their gambling career before they became problem gamblers. Gambling Concern works to identify and understand these behaviours.

Signs of Problem Gambling

Persistent and recurrent maladaptive gambling behaviour is indicated by 3 or more of the following:

  1. Preoccupation with gambling
  2. Tolerance (spending more and more money or gambling for increasing periods of time)
  3. Unsuccessful efforts to control gambling
  4. Withdrawal ( Irritability and restlessness when trying to cut down or stop gambling)
  5. Escape (Using gambling to escape from life’s responsibilities)
  6. Chasing losses
  7. Deceit
  8. Committing illegal acts
  9. Damage or loss of relationships or job
  10. Relying on others for bailouts
